It’s enough to fill you with dread in the morning: that red flashing message on your weather app or the latest YouTube posting by Frankie the Weatherman shouting “Winter Storm Warming”. Well guess what? We live in Canada so the weather, particularly in the winter, is a factor we have to deal with.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature does not really give a hoot about what you have planned. That important client meeting? Bah! Ice pellets coming your way! That critical management meeting to set next year’s budget? Fahgetaboutit!
As we at Telemerge like to say, business video conferencing isn’t just what we do, it’s all we do. As a result, we use the technology so pervasively through our day-to-day work that it’s easy to forget that what we take for granted many organizations simply haven’t even thought about.
Let me give you an example.
If we rewind the clock about 24 hours to yesterday morning (Dec 19), that nasty red warming bar was flashing across the Weather Network app. Yup, WINTER STORM WARNING! Ice pellets and rain, snow accumulation of anywhere from just a few centimeters to 30 to 50 centimeters.
Back to my earlier point about Mother Nature’s complete ambivalence about what we had planned, guess what? Our year-end company Town Hall meeting and gift exchange was in serious jeopardy. We have employees that commute in from up to 100 kilometers away, so there was no way we were going to ask them to have to make that treacherous trek to the office.
With nothing more than a shrug and an quick update to the Outlook meeting notice, the Town Hall event is now a video event with staff comfortably – and safely – ensconced in their home offices. Of course, the gift exchange will have to wait (we haven’t solved the technology challenge of transporting physical objects via video… yet!) but the opportunity to talk about the terrific year we’ve had as a company, and the exciting things that await us in 2014, will still be conducted with nary a hitch.
So what could have been a profoundly business-affecting event was nullified with the use of our all-in-one video solution. Take that, Mother Nature!
On behalf of Team Telemerge, we wish you all the best for a safe and happy holiday season.
